LANZAROTE LIVE ARTS LOOK AHEAD

LANZAROTE LIVE ARTS LOOK AHEAD

by Norman Warwick

With such a lengthy list of events ahead it was great that Miguel Ferrer and / or his staff in Lanzarote had taken the time to sort those events into date order, certainly for us as most Sidetracks & Detours readers will be interested in events from Lanzarote´s wide range of genres. So as Julie Andrews sang in The Sound of Music, ´let´s start at the very beginning, that´s a very good place to start´.

So, on the Ist October on Lanzarote there is the opening of two arts exhibitions.

There was a time when the transit of days and nights was marked by the coming and going of the tides. The island did not exist. There was only a shore where the doors of the houses, the bridges, the boats, the lows, the islets and the tide lined. Only the sea. The sea and the sky, certain and immeasurable territories. In this artistic project Francisco Montelongo and Fran Rodríguez set out to reconstruct the visual universe linked to the natural and human landscape that barely survives on our shores, in the form of small recreations of watercolors and illustrations that transport us to the cultural imaginary of a maritime territory that defines us as orphans of this shore.

Activities to complement the exhibition included guided visits by the informed and informed art historian Estefania Camejo

“Oscura” is an audiovisual project created by Iván Vilella and inspired by the exhibition “Sincretismo” by the artist Rigoberto Camacho that was exhibited in 2020 at the CIC El Almacén. It is an artistic proposal of symbiosis that moves between the sound installation and the subtle visual stimulus, to highlight and combine some of the scopes of anthropological syncretism: the cultural mixture and the native influence, as critical vectors of rupture with the current and paradigmatic homogeneous spaces of globalization. We are proposed to make an immersive experience through soundscapes that accentuate the value of absence, shadow, the recondite or impurity, where blackness and darkness are configured as a vindication of sublime beauty.

Lanzarote Ensemble

The history of music would never have been the same without the masterpieces of the Austrian Gustav Mahler, who expands the symphonic vocabulary to its expressive limits. In each of his symphonies he advances, step by step, towards an imposing and full sonority. The fourth symphony, composed for a formation measured in number, if we consider its later production, is the central axis of its orchestral composition. Lanzarote Ensemble will perform the four movements of this work thanks to an adaptation for 21 musicians, who will impregnate the auditorium with lyricism and sensitivity under a post-romantic language.

Lanzarote Ensemble, will have two guest artists: the soprano Sheyla Rizo and the violinist Barbora Valiukeviciute, who will be the concertmaster. We look forward to bringing you our review of the performance.

In Las Canciones, a group of people gather to listen to various music. And what at first seemed like a harmless act – a group of people listening to and singing music – ends up transforming them all. A work by Pablo Messiez, created from characters and situations in the stories of Anton Chekhov and born from the desire to dwell on the mystery of listening. Listen to the world and listen to its music against which no eyelid protects since, as Paul Quignard says, no eyelid closes over the ear.

Three couples at the dawn of the twentieth century spend a weekend in the countryside, but… An uproar of love leads these urban characters in a country setting to detonate on a summer night… A dreamlike game of existentialist reflection on communication between the group, and between oneself. Desires and needs flourish in that field full of magical goblins and incandescent lights in this comedy entangled with the constants of Woody Allen cinema and its characters inordinate by the environment that surrounds them.

PHOTO MADRE In 1998, Teresa Correa, carrying out a photographic documentation work with archaeological remains of the Canarian Museum, is in front of a skull of a woman of North African origin that has the same bone structure as hers. The skull 1383, baptized by the Gran Canarian artist as “Mother”, will be a fundamental turning point that will motivate a personal process of anthropological research and artistic reflection that will lead her not only to rethink the unique and hegemonic look that evaluates and excludes women from the cultural and social construct that surrounds them, but also to reformulate the concepts of identity,  time or memory, in the form of a dialogue that visually transits between visible (revealed) and invisible (undisclosed) reality.

Karina Beltrán’s curious and intuitive gaze (left) makes photography the ideal means of expression with which to explore her nomadic existence. Through a compulsive methodology based on the referential, the artist forms a cartography of interior fragments, objects, lights and atmospheres. Beltrán turns visual work into a search for the eternal, into a form of melancholic and existential expression that gives body to a poetics of fragmentation. The final result is a great puzzle composed of metaphors of itself, a universe of the everyday and the small, of the ephemeral and the unforeseen, in which to find the only thing that can save us: beauty.

The Gran Canarian artist Pepa Sosa, within the context of her exhibition “Casa”, proposes us to move away from the conventional format of the catalog to present us with an artist’s book configured as a territory of artistic and poetic exploration in which images of the pieces and installations made in El Almacén are combined, as well as texts by the Creator of Gran Canaria herself around the processes of creation and personal reflection on that referential space,  own and intimate which we call “house”. This artist’s book features the photographs of Carlos Reyes and the graphic design and layout of Carmen Corujo. The artist will be accompanied in this presentation by the art historian Estefanía Camejo and Pepe Betancort.

The International Festival of Contemporary Dance of the Canary Islands, baptized as MASDANZA (right), celebrates twenty-six years since, in 1996, it was born under the direction of Natalia Medina. This October returns to Lanzarote for the tenth consecutive year with a careful selection of five companies that arrive from South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan and Spain.

Some readers will know that my son is married to a South Korean girl and has lived over there for twenty years now and they bring up our eleven year old grand-daughter, Olivia, so we are especially looking forward to seeing the South Korean performances. We already are aware of some of the cultural compare and contrast situations between The Canary Islands, the UK and Suoth Korea and the subject matters discussed below sound intriguing. Be sure to look out for our subsequent review.

FLOWER HEART  from Seoul, South Korea Creator & Performer: Yang Byung Hyun Music: Sigur Ros “Fjogur Piano” All life begins to wither over time. As people age, our bodies and heart wither, but fortunately, unlike the body, the heart can flourish again.

WHEN WE ARE from Barcelona, Spain Creators & Performers: Carla Cervantes Caro & Sandra Egido Ibañez Original Music: Nico Casal “Fog” Music: Young Collective “Back & Forth” Costumes: Carla Cervantes and Sandra Egido Lighting Design: Antonio Navarro When we are together. When we are the space we inhabit. When we are earth, skin and water. When we are in essence being present. When we are plural we are the same element. We are when there is listening.

CUANDO SOMOS from Barcelona, España

by the creators ansd interpreters Carla Cervantes Caro & Sandra Egido Ibañez with original music, Fog, by Nico Casal and music, Back And Forth by Young Collective

When we are together. When we are the space we inhabit. When we are earth, skin and water. When we are in essence being present. When we are plural we are the same element. We are when there is listening.

MIENTRAS EL FÉLIDO DUERME from Mexico is created and interpreted by Danya Guadalupe González Cristerna to music including Nicolas Jaar´s  “Nothingness”, “Club Capital”, Vetusta Morla´s  “Trastos Viejos”, and by Telefon Tel Aviv “Your face reminds me of when I was old”

This is a Body narrative about a body that is in a situation that makes it emit states that are unknown and take it out of control. Everything, outside the collectivity, in the privacy of its solitude. Without suspicion I tell you that what you hear is a lie. Why? Because the discourse belies it. Appearances disappear, while the felid sleeps.

TALK ABOUT DEATH is again brought to us from Seoul, via South Korea Creator: Nanhee Yook  with performers: Nanhee Yook & Seol-yoon Park. Original Music is Peter Mitchell´s lcarus and Scarlett’s Breath. The dance tells of the e limit of life and death, life is sometimes comforted by death. The saddest moment is when facing the death of a loved one. However, the fear of living could be greater. The movements of this piece are based on the tradition of Korean funeral ceremonies called SangYeo and Yeom. Minimized movements that aim to draw with serenity the thoughts of death as a mere serial process of life

DIVERGENCE is brought over from New Taipei City, Taiwán having been created by Chien-Chih Chang and will be interpreted by Siang-Fu Zeng & Tse-An Lin to original music by Jun-De-Liu.

The two go down divergent paths. As they walk, sometimes they go in parallel, sometimes they rub, sometimes they overlap, and sometimes they cross paths. Their relationship seems to be in a state of competition and contention, back and forth between winning and losing without a definitive result. Step by step, they reveal their strategy and general disposition, as if playing chess on a board. However, in the end, they walk side by side as one, moving in the same direction.

Just as Lola, 18, a transsexual, learns that she can finally undergo sex change surgery, her mother, who is her only financial support, dies. Fulfilling the last wishes of their mother, Lola and their father, who have always been in permanent conflict and have not seen each other in two years, have to undertake a journey together to the Belgian coast. But they will soon realize that the outcome of the trip may not be what they both expected.

So, the last day of September has brought a bumper bundle of news of live arts coming back to life in England, The UK, the USA, The Canary Islands, South Korea. We (I) have been known to make the odd mistake or typo, however, so I do urge you to check times and venues etc before just turning up. Actually pre-booking due to covid restrictions does help keep your diary in order but also check Miguel´s What´s On listings at Lanzarote Information because he certainly picks up municipality events that I would otherwise miss. Most of these municipalities do publish their own usually free glossy listings monthly or quarterly magazines that can be picked up in garages and supermarkets, so even if you are here on holiday you could catch some arts and culture if you want to.

And if any one of you attends an event you feel you would like to review please submit your thoughts in a word-document attachment to an e-mail to me at normanwarwick55”gmail.com

I´ll happily editorialise it and include a brief bio and photo of you if you send them. I will try to publish as widely as possible and you will be fully attributed. I look forward to hearing from you.

It is, of course, fantastic that Miguel Ferrer, in the island-government Department Of Culture, takes the trouble to share art and cultural agenda with both my own Sidetracks & Detours daily blog and ¨Miguel´s´ Lanzarote Information outlet. Often at live arts events here we bump into new residents from England who are following the arts recommendations from those magazines. That means of course, that not only do we have happy readers who turn to us for information but also that the island benefits financially and socially from new residents contributing both to the island´s economy and also to Lanzarote´s social integration and harmony.

Personally Dee and I feel that after we have been made to feel so welcome here, for the last seven years amongst the islanders, that is the least we can do. So, bring on October as it seems the Arts have produced a bumper crop.
