She rose to fame as the lead singer of the vocal group the Supremes, who became Motown&#8217;s most successful act during the 1960s and one of the world&#8217;s best-selling girl groups of all time. They remain the best-charting female group in history, with a total of twelve number-one hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including, Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Come See About Me, and Love Child\u00b4. Nevertheless, some of the music press has damned her latest album, tour and news of a major festival gig with faint praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Positive comments in Rolling Stone can lend great credibility to who or what might be under review. Whilst some music journos were recently quick to disdain the re-entry into our lives of Diana Ross, David Browne, in a Rolling Stone article was considerably more even handed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/AUTHOR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7563\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/AUTHOR.jpg 183w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/AUTHOR-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/AUTHOR-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/AUTHOR-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/AUTHOR-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Author David Browne, <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is an American journalist and author. He is currently a senior writer at Rolling Stone, where he has been a contributor since 2008. He was the resident music critic at Entertainment Weekly between 1990 and 2006. He was an editor at Music &amp; Sound Output magazine and a music critic at the New York Daily News before EW. He has written recently in Rolling Stone ofa new album by Fiana Eoss and her plans to support it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7564\" width=\"460\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1-11.jpg 333w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1-11-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4Ms Ross (right)  and the army of songwriters and producers who helped make\u00a0her new album, Thank You,\u00a0seem well aware that those tracks \u2014 along with other moments, like the buoyantly discombobulated Upside Down or largely forgotten minor hits like Remember Me \u2014 remain Ross\u2019 most enduring work on her own\u00b4,<\/em> Mr. Browne reckoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4On&nbsp;Thank You, Team Ross assertively aims to recapture that vibe for the Soul Cycle era. Be they ballads or dance-floor throwdowns, the songs glisten with disco strings, sky\u2019s-the-limit choruses, and super-crisp beats. Over them, Ross again returns to her role as pop therapist: &nbsp;\u00b4Jump off the edge\/And find out where you land\/Go take the lead\/And teach the world to dance,\u00b4 she sings, in one typical example, or, elsewhere, &nbsp;\u00b4Lookin\u2019 all around us\/There\u2019s so much potential\/A little hope could inspire\/If we ignite the passion, all to desire\/That little spark becomes a fire\u00b4. You almost expect to be charged a membership fee for each listening session.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7565\" width=\"252\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-12.jpg 110w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-12-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-12-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-12-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Those sentiments, which pretty much drive every one of the 13 tracks on\u00a0Thank You (left), can feel oddly impersonal\u00b4,<\/em>  David Browne informs us, <em>\u00b4as if Ross isn\u2019t conveying hard-earned life experience of her own but offering her fans a pep talk. (And given the last year and a half we\u2019ve all had, maybe they need it.) From start to finish, she conveys them in a voice that sounds as airbrushed as some of the words; even though she\u2019s 77, it\u2019s hard to detect \u00a0a single lived-in crack in her delivery. It\u2019s all part of the strange deja-vu experience that is\u00a0Thank You. The songs feel familiar, as if they\u2019ve even assembled from parts of previous hits. (There\u2019s more than a little Endless Love in something like The Answer\u2019s Always Love). Even some of lyrics here and there \u2014\u00b4You say I\u2019m just a dreamer\u00b4, \u00b4The first time I saw your face\u00b4 \u2014 almost seem designed to evoke classic old-school pop hits by other artists of her heyday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All that said, there\u2019s still an inordinate deal of pleasure to be taken in music that wants to sweep you up and revel in sonic bliss, whether you\u2019ve emerged from a still-lingering pandemic or not. You won\u2019t find a more ebullient resurrection of the Studio 54 era than Tomorrow, and In Your Heart brings to mind the meditative dance tracks Madonna explored in the mid to late Nineties. During those moments of feather-bed glory,&nbsp;Thank You&nbsp;recalls a time when pop was proud to be&nbsp;pop, not therapy sessions set to simmer-level rhythms and nebulous hooks. Ross isn\u2019t preaching about love hangovers, but she\u2019s still looking to cure a few modern ills\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now Somerset Live (among other news agencies) say that organisers of Glastonbury Festival have confirmed that Diana Ross will be heading to Worthy Farm next summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was previously due to take on the Sunday afternoon slot in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic saw the festival cancelled for two consecutive years. However, the Motown star will be taking on the famous Sunday legends slot on the Pyramid stage which will mark her debut at the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"180\" height=\"170\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7566\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the age of 77, the singer will follow in the footsteps of previous legends such as Kylie Minogue, Lionel Richie, Dolly Parton, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American singer, songwriter and actress will bring to Somerset such hits such as I&#8217;m Coming Out,  Upside Down,  Endless Love and Ain&#8217;t No Mountain High Enough <strong><em>(right)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"282\" height=\"185\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/note-18.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7567\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The primary source for this article <\/strong> <strong>was an article published in Rolling Stone and written by David Browne.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In our occasional re-postings Sidetracks And Detours are confident that we are not only sharing with our readers excellent articles written by experts but are also pointing to informed and informative sites readers will re-visit time and again.
