{"id":21572,"date":"2024-06-17T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-17T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aata.dev\/?p=21572"},"modified":"2024-06-16T16:44:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-16T15:44:21","slug":"british-pop-culture-lives-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aata.dev\/index.php\/2024\/06\/17\/british-pop-culture-lives-there\/","title":{"rendered":"BRITISH POP CULTURE LIVES THERE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>another reason why I Love Manchester is because<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BRITISH POP CULTURE LIVES THERE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>says Norman Warwick<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Pop Archive (BPA), is a ground-breaking national collection dedicated to the preservation and research of popular culture, counter-culture, and youth culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, quite appropriately it lives in Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1-20.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21573\" width=\"437\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1-20.jpg 680w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1-20-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection is huge, encompassing all sorts of wonderful items documenting British pop culture, situated at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ilovemanchester.com\/john-rylands-library-transformation\">John Rylands Library.<\/a> <em><strong>(left)<\/strong><\/em> Manchester\u2019s incredible cultural scene is a global symbol of innovation, creativity and social progress \u2013 so it\u2019s only right it plays a large part in the collection. The city\u00b4s history, rooted particularly within music, TV and the arts, distinguishes the city as unique. It makes it the perfect setting for a collection that preserves and tells the stories of popular culture on a national scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the UK\u2019s first large-scale archive focused specifically on popular culture, the BPA aims to celebrate and safeguard the rich and diverse heritage that has shaped British society and influenced the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection comprises major archives of individuals and organisations involved in British popular culture and the creative industries: from the business records of managers, music venues and TV companies to the personal papers of iconic musicians, artists, designers and photographers, to the recorded experiences of audiences and fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This innovative archive not only preserves the past but also serves as a dynamic resource for future generations to explore and understand the pivotal role of British popular culture on the global stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Matt-Bancroft-Kevin-Cummins-CREDIT-JILL-FURMANOVSKY.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21574\" width=\"435\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Matt-Bancroft-Kevin-Cummins-CREDIT-JILL-FURMANOVSKY.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Matt-Bancroft-Kevin-Cummins-CREDIT-JILL-FURMANOVSKY-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Matt-Bancroft-Kevin-Cummins-CREDIT-JILL-FURMANOVSKY-768x513.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Matt-Bancroft-Kevin-Cummins-CREDIT-JILL-FURMANOVSKY-705x471.jpeg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> Mat Bancroft, <strong><em>(right)<\/em><\/strong> who curated the collection, has been talking recently about what they have in store, and which bits of Manchester history are tucked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The project was publicly launched in April 2021, <\/em>he says, <em>&nbsp;having been in development for a couple of years prior.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It was a collaboration between the John Rylands Library and the John Ryland Research Institute.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The idea was to develop a new initiative that brought various kinds of materials into the library, ones from popular culture.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This aimed to engage different people who did not typically use the library\u2019s special collections, which are based at the Rylands.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We have a broad remit as a national project.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019re looking at materials related to UK popular culture, likely from the mid-1950s to the present day.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>While music remains central to the project, we also touch on design, theatre, poetry, and other elements of popular culture.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our focus is on anyone involved in any aspect of popular culture, be it musicians, managers, club organizers, designers, photographers, or even individuals behind fan clubs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We prioritise archives over collections, focusing on those directly involved in the scene.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>However, we\u2019re open to considering various contributions, even if the individuals aren\u2019t world-famous.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Recent acquisitions include materials from photographer Kevin Cummins, DJ Mike Pickering, and Linda Brogan, who did the \u2018Excavating the Reno\u2019 &nbsp;project.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Expanding our criteria for what is considered archival is essential as the project grows.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our long-term &nbsp;aim is for the British Pop Archive to be representative of UK popular culture in the broadest terms.<\/em><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When we first opened the exhibition, we did an exhibit called Collection. We\u2019ve also got some stuff from Rob Gretton \u2013 manager of Joy Division and New Order.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/andyspinozax.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21578\" width=\"436\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/andyspinozax.jpg 700w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/andyspinozax-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ilovemanchester.com\/hacienda-legends-share-memories-iconic-club\"><em>We included items from the Hacienda<\/em><\/a><em>, City Life magazine founder&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ilovemanchester.com\/12-questions-manchester-bees-andy-spinoza-managing-director-skv-communications\"><em>Andy Spinoza<\/em><\/a><em>,  <strong>(right) <\/strong>and&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ilovemanchester.com\/manchester-books-that-everyone-should-read\"><em>photographer Kevin Cummins<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Additionally, we incorporated materials from Granada Television\u2019s corporate archive and the personal archives of former Granada employees, Stephen Kelly, Judith Jones, and Norman Frisby.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It was a mixture that offered a good sense of where we were at that point, including several items that had not been seen publicly before<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We discussed whether Manchester was the right city for the archive early on, and to be honest, it was a no-brainer.&nbsp;However, Manchester is a city renowned for its contributions to popular culture, from bands and artists to designers. The city\u2019s regeneration, inspired by&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ilovemanchester.com\/birthplace-of-manchesters-own-factory-records-gets-a-blue-plaque\"><em>Factory Records<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;and the Hacienda in the late \u201970s and early \u201980s, showcases how important it was culturally.&nbsp;While the archive is a national project, Manchester\u2019s rich history in pop culture makes it the perfect home for the British Pop Archive.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019re working on a project focusing on lost urban music stories in Manchester, particularly black music stories.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019re hosting a panel discussion as part of the University of Manchester Festival and the university\u2019s bicentenary celebrations.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This project aims to uncover why certain stories have been forgotten, starting with musicians and bands from Moss Side.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>While the well-known bands are celebrated for good reason, we want to ensure we tell the broader story of Manchester\u2019s musical heritage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mat spoke as part of the Universally Manchester 200-year celebrations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His part of the talk was called: Wake up and Be Somebody \u2013 Uncovering Lost Urban Music Stories in Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took place on:&nbsp;<em>Friday 7th June, On the Green, Gilbert Square<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInspired by music historian Keithly Brandy, this is an intriguing new project looking at the city\u2019s forgotten or rarely known urban music stories \u2013 asking why, outside of their community, do they not form part of the wider narrative, and how can they act as a force for change and inspiration to a new generation of artists?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21579\" width=\"185\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4.webp 318w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-80x80.webp 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-36x36.webp 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-180x180.webp 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-120x120.webp 120w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4-100x100.webp 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sylvia Teller  <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> This thought-provoking panel discussion documented these remarkable stories as part of the British Pop Archive, based at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library.
