One of my favourite songs of the early seventies was Can I Have Money Back (Please Sir?)  by Gerry Rafferty of Baker Street fame. It wasthe title track of his first solo album, the distinctive cover design of which was by was by John Patrick Byrne<\/a> and was the start of a long working relationship between Rafferty and the playwright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LP was well received, but performed poorly in charts and sales, in part because Rafferty had just left a well-known band, The Humblebums<\/a>. Given that his partner in that outfit had been Billy Connolly and that this first solo release also saw Joe Egan<\/a> come on board, with whom Rafferty formed Stealers Wheel<\/a> shortly afterwards, it is clear that Gerry Rafferty kept good company throughout his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title line of this track was a very catchy hook, and is a line I often hear playing in my head when confronted by un-civil service or shoddy goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few months ago, we advised a couple who are friends of ours to reserve their seats early ready for forthcoming concerts and offered to pick up tickets for them when we bought ours at Cic El Almacen. We did so, on a Monday, purchasing tickets in advance for  concerts by Orquesta Barroca De Tenerife at Teatro El Salinero, Alexis Infante and Javier Colina at Cic El Almacen, Chucho Valdes playing Jazz Bata 2 and Mariola Membrives singing Lorca Spanish Songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We delivered that packet of tickets to our friends  on the Tuesday and they paid us the 110 euros cash for their eight tickets to the particular shows. The next day we were all locked down, and couldn\u00b4t even visit each other as they lived in a different town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came announcements of cancellations of concerts, and we were left feeling very guilty at persuading them to part with their money before they might have otherwise done, just because we are so child-like in our eagerness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly that song from the seventies was back in my head, and I found myself wondering again, Can I Have My Money Back, Please Sir. No news was forthcoming, and plans regarding re-scheduling had to be put on hold, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, just a couple of days ago The Cabildo de Lanzarote announced that they will refund the amount of tickets for all cancelled cultural events. Led by the guidance of the councillor for arts and culture, Alberto Aguiar, it has now been decided to cancel definitively all the planned events and return to the users the amount of the tickets. Initially Alberto had look to re-schedule new dates, but the conditions as we emerge from lockdown advise cancelling definitively. In the event that the shows can be held, the locations will be put back on sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This seems, even to this journalist with his claims to be a massive fan of the arts offer here on Lanzarote, an eminently sensible decision at this stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was also a delight to see an initiative of the Cabildo\u00b4s own volition to offer a refund to people who had purchased a reserved ticket for any of the events planned by Cultura Lanzarote before the lockdown. We, along with hundreds of others we would guess,  received an email with the steps to follow for the refund of the amount of the payments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interested parties were advised request the return directly by sending an email to the address cultura@cabildodelanzarote.com<\/a> provide the last four credit\/depit card numbers with which their tickets had been purchased, as well as the full name of the cardholder listed on the credit\/debit card and a contact phone number.  For any questions ticket holders  could also call the Cabildo 928 810 100 (ext: 2456).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cultural officer himself has clarified the reasons that have led the Cabildo Culture area to make this decision. \u00b4Initially, we were trusting that we could resume face-to-face activity soon.  Bur since the circumstances remain very changeable and uncertain and that in some cases, as in the Chucho Valdes concert for example, we had sold more tickets of that 30% capacity that is now all that is allowed to be occupied, we decided to cancel all the events definitively and return the appropriate amounts\u00b4 said Alberto Aguiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b4In the event that the activities can be resumed,\u00b4 the counsellor continued, \u00b4the tickets will be put up for sale again.\u00b4<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alberto Aguiar wanted to point out that almost all the people who bought tickets online on our website have already received the email in which they are told the steps to follow for the return of the tickets, \u00b4but just in case someone did not receive it or has sneaked into their spam folder, we wanted to make this public call to inform all users\u00b4, stated the head of Lanzarote Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director of the Culture area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote ended by apologizing \u00b4for the inconvenience caused\u00b4 and thanking the \u00b4public \u00b4for their patience and understanding,\u00b4 and asking them not to hesitate to make contact asking for any clarification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, we had paid cash, which throws a spanner into the works, but have written to the Cabildo, as at this stage there is no face-to-face contact,, we don\u00b4t think, as to what procedures and evidence we must supply to have the money returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We applaud the promptness and politeness of The Cabildo as well as their decisiveness. The  money back will be very welcome, thank you sir,\u2026.but seeing these artists playing in public again one day will be even more welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless,, it isn\u00b4t only the ticketed for-profit events that are being hurt by the lockdown, but the artists at regular free admission events are as keen as ever to ensure their work reaches an audience and, as we have reported on these pages dozens of time over the past three months, aspirant artists and arts groups have been adding technological strings to their bows in order to ensure they can do so. \u00b4Virtual\u00b4 concerts, dances, poetry and comedy have become the way to go, and Michael Higgins dropped an e mail to Sidetracs & Detours today with brfief comments from just such a presentation over the weekend by the poetry writing and reading compilation that reads once a month at The Baum in Rochdale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He says he was pleased to see Robin Parker mentioned in our recent dispatches. A former Mayor of the Borough , with whom I was co-compere for several years, still continues to host the events and on Sunday 14th<\/sup> June he was assisted by another poet, Katie Hiagh, who organised the Zoom presentation , with each of more than fifteen readers delivering work, usually of their own creation, from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael welcomes the easing of lockdown taking place in the UK at the moment, but does not yet see a bright new beginning of pub culture. He seems only guardedly optimistic that pubs will be even partially opened by July and is concerned about how protracted social distancing and restrictions on bar service might impact on the pub trade in general, and on The Baum as a performance space in particular. That would rule out use of the upstairs room at The Baum as currently enjoyed by the poets I used to call Those Bard From The Baum, unless they can deliver in the beer garden behind the pub, but the opportunities for that would also be dependent on kind weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael tells me he presented a \u00b4cruel parody\u00b4 of Masefield\u00b4s poem, Sea Fever, the unsullied version of which is actually a particular favourite of mine, with its major themes of wanderlust, adventure and nostalgia. I know that despite parodying the work, Michael is actually also a fan of John Masefield and he reminded me in his e mail that he has set a tune to one of the poet\u00b4s Salt Water Ballads. Whilst he fears that some might feel parts of the vocabulary of the time as being discriminatory I don\u00b4t believe that was the intention of the writer, and I certainly agree with Michael that even in these sensitive times (perhaps enlightened times is a less pejorative term) the book-burners might find higher profile targets, perhaps more deserving of their ire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not one to shy away from challenging literature, however, Michael is currently continuing his re-reading of Masefield\u00b4s Reynard The Fox as well as Ted Hughes\u00b4 Guadete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
