Tina Benitez Eves, writing in American Songwriter, said \u00b4Carole King was born a songwriter,\u00b4<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journalist told of how, whilst still a teenager, attending James Madison high school in Brooklyn, New York, Carole King was already selling songs to publishing companies throughout the city, while writing songs for her band Co-Sines and making demo albums with her schoolmate Paul Simon. By the nineteen sixties, King met her soon-to-be husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin at Queens College and went on to write some of the biggest hits throughout the sixties and the seventies   and subsequently enjoyed  a career that spanned more than six decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King\u2019s hit songs for other artists even bypass the enormity of her 1971 solo album Tapestry<\/em> that included hits like You\u2019ve Got a Friend, I Feel the Earth Move, So Far Away, and It\u2019s Too Late<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kicking off the sixties King earned her first No. 1 hit as a songwriter with The Shirelles\u2019 hit Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, also recorded by King on Tapestry<\/em> and released on the girl group\u2019s 1960 debut Tonight\u2019s the Night<\/em>. King later composed Aretha Franklin\u2019s 1967 hit (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman along with Goffin and producer Jerry Wexler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the sixties decade, alone, King wrote smash after smash hit cross-genre, from doo-wop and pop, R&B, soul and rock\u2014and even a few songs The Beatles wanted to cover (Take Good Care of My Baby, and Chains).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of her most notable works were<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1       Take Good Care Of My Baby, Bobby Vee (1961)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in September 1961 and becoming a hit for pop singer Bobby Vee, Take Good Care Of My Baby was also covered by The Beatles, Dion and the Belmonts, Bobby Vinton, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, The Monkees\u2019 Micky Dolenz and more in the years that followed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2       The Loco-Motion, Little Eva (1962)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally written for the R&B singer Dee Dee Sharp, who turned down the song, The Loco-Motion became an instant hit for Little Eva in 1962 and throughout the next two decades. The song hit again in 1974 for the rock band Grand Funk Railroad and again in 1987 when Kylie Minogue released a cover of the track<\/a> on her 1988 debut Kylie<\/em>, which reached No. 3 in the U.S. on the Hot 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3       Chains, The Cookies (1962) \/ The Beatles (1963)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally written for the Brooklyn, New York-bred The Cookies<\/a>, Chains was the first time the R&B group charted since their 1956 hit In Paradise. Over in Liverpool, England, The Beatles were also using the song in their live sets, and by 1963, the band recorded a version for their debut Please Please Me. <\/em>For Chains, George Harrison took over lead vocals for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4   Crying In the Rain, The Everly Brothers (1962)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King and Howard Greenfield<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Co-written with Howard Greenfield, a co-worker of King and Goffin at Aldon Music, Crying In The Rain was recorded by The Everly Brothers and reached No. 6 on the U.S. Pop charts. Aretha Franklin also included a live recording of the track on her 1968 album, Aretha in Paris<\/em>. In 1990, Norwegian band A-Ha also recorded Crying in the Rain<\/a>, on their fourth album, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, <\/em>which remains on their set list to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the age of ten I found The Everly Brothers Crying In The Rain. My cousin Diane, a thirteen year old sophisticat, played me a copy that her older Brother Tony had brought home from his travels in the merchant navy. All this unrequited love b usiness didn\u00b4t mean too much to a pre-teen son of conservative pits but my cousins Diane and Gill their brother Tony played me a crash course in how to Wake Up Little Suzie, Walk Right Back and Ledatherneck Jamoree and I was hooked. Within five years I would be asking When Will I Be Loved ?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5       Up On The Roof, The Drifters (1963)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching No. 5 in the U.S. on the Pop Singles chart and No. 4 on the R&B singles chart for the doo-wop and R&B group The Drifters, Up On The Roof was released on their 1964 album, Under the Boardwalk<\/em>\u2014the title track became another big hit for the quintet a year later. Up On the Roof was also listed as the one the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6       One Fine Day, The Chiffons (1963)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by the title of the Puccini aria Un Bel di Vedremo from the opera Madama Butterfly<\/em>, One Fine Day was recored by girl group The Chiffons and became a mega hit. Covered by everyone from Bette Midler, to The Carpenters and more, King also recorded the song in 1980, and it was featured on soundtrack for the 1996 romantic comedy of the same name, starring George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer, along with a version by Natalie Merchant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7  I\u2019m Into Something Good, Herman\u2019s Hermits (1964)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally recorded by The Cookies, British band Herman\u2019s Hermits ended up taking the song to No. 1 in the UK and even entered the U.S. charts at No. 42 at the height of the British Invasion. King revealed that the song was inspired by The Beach Boys\u2019 Brian Wilson. \u201cI make no bones about it,\u201d said King<\/a>. \u201cThat song was influenced by Brian\u2019s music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1963 ny dad was the incumbent Chairman or whatever of our local Round Table and as such had to book an act for his inaugural Chairman\u00b4s evening scheduled for 1964. So, around ten to twelve months ahead of time he was trying to book and actg and was offered Herman\u00b4s Hermits for about seven shillings and sixpence. \u00a8never heard of \u00e9m\u00b4, said dad, and to be fairf, really nobody had in 1963. However, on the night of dad\u00b4s event, for which he booked Dave Berry, top of the charts atg the time of engagement with Little Things, the afore never heard of Herman\u00b4s Hermits were at number one and Peter Noone was seen and heard everyhwe with his chirpy singing and dancing that looks so old-fashio0ned today.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8       Oh No Not My Baby, Maxine Brown (1964)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Covered by everyone from Cher to Aretha Franklin, Linda Rondstadt, and Dusty Springfield, \u201cOh No Not My Baby\u201d tells the story about the denial of accepting the reality of a partner\u2019s numerous infidelities. In 1964, the reached No. 24 on the pop chart for R&B singer Maxine Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9  Goin\u2019 Back, Dusty Springfield (1966)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singing about the loss of  innocence that comes with adulthood<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think I\u2019m goin\u2019 back \/ To the things I learned so well in my youth \/<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think I\u2019m returning to \/ Those days when I was young enough to know the truth<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Goin\u2019 Back was made famous by Dusty Springfield in 1966 and was later covered by Diana Ross, The Pretenders, Bon Jovi, Phil Collins, and even Freddie Mercury, later released on a compilation of the Queen singer\u2019s singles, Messenger of the Gods: The Singles<\/em>, in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I later took The Byrds\u00b4 version to heart, but this was the song that re- me to Dusty Springfield.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

photo 4a <\/em>She had been a major player, with The Springfields with her brother Tom and Mike Hurst in turning me gently towards country music which begat Americana. The trio had an American top twenty hit (the first british act ever to do so) with Silver Threads And Golden Needles I fell in love with song and began to listen to mainly American sounds. I should also say that The Springfields\u00b4Ilsand Od Dreams was aseminal song that also led me to folk musc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 Wasn\u2019t Born to Follow, The Byrds (1968)<\/strong>

Off The Byrds\u2019 fifth album The Notorious Byrd Brothers,<\/em> the song also made its way onto the soundtrack of the 1969 road drama Easy Rider,<\/em> starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. That year, King also recorded her own version of the song while fronting the group The City, and in 1999, Dusty Springfield covered the song on her album of lost recordings, Dusty in London<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Notorius Byrds Brothers was an album, along with a flock of other albums by The Byrds,  presented to me at my last day of college by a Fonz-like figure called Coln Locker. This bundle was my long way round to writers like Bob Dylan,\u2026and Carole King.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Goin\u00b4Back and Wasn\u00b4t Born To Follow always feeling me to to be almost diametrically opposed  in attitude Carole King proved herself to be able to wrote songs that disdained gender stereotypes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certainly, the ten songs that Tina Eves Benitez has selected here would alone make a more than acceptable Now That\u00b4s What I Call Sixties album.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, she wrote in defiance of typecasts, she wrote hits for herself and countless others, she defined a decade and she has been an inspiration to more than one generation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her memoir; Natural Woman was happy and sad and wise and every time I hear she speaks as a talking head on a documentary about a fellow musician she is gentle and generous.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we say in the UK\u2026.., Long Live The King !<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
