{"id":12806,"date":"2022-12-13T08:54:03","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T08:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aata.dev\/?p=12806"},"modified":"2022-12-13T08:54:04","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T08:54:04","slug":"dolly-goes-a-rockin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aata.dev\/index.php\/2022\/12\/13\/dolly-goes-a-rockin\/","title":{"rendered":"DOLLY goes a rockin\u00b4!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Norman Warwick hears how<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DOLLY GOES A-ROCKING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12807\" width=\"241\" height=\"362\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon receiving her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, the American Songwriter journalist reminds us, which she initially declined but later accepted,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/5-songs-you-didnt-know-dolly-parton-wrote-for-other-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dolly Parton<\/a>\u00a0<strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> made a vow: she would record a rock album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not expecting that I\u2019ll get in, but if I do, I\u2019ll immediately, next year, have to put out a great rock and roll album, which I\u2019ve wanted to do for years\u2014like a&nbsp;Linda Ronstadt&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/behind-the-meaning-of-the-band-name-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heart<\/a>&nbsp;kind of thing,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/country\/dolly-parton-rock-hall-nomination-bow-out-1235043594\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Parton<\/a>&nbsp;when she was first nominated. \u201cSo this may have been just a God-wink for me to go ahead and do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton also shared that her husband, Carl Dean, is a huge rock fan, so she would be making the album partially for him. \u201cWhen I got nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, I thought \u2018Well, no better time to do it,\u2019 said Dolly. \u201cI had always wanted to do it. My husband is a big hard rock and roll fan, and for years I thought, \u2018One of these days I\u2019d like to do an album mainly just for him, just to kind of do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added, \u201cWhen I got nominated, I thought, \u2018Why not just go ahead and do it while the iron\u2019s hot\u2014maybe have some of the greats, the legends of rock, on there playing, if they would.\u00b4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The working concept of the album involves more than covering songs, said Parton, who wants to feature the various rock bands associated with each song to join her, as well as including some original tracks. \u201cI thought about writing a song called \u2018Rock of Ages,\u2019 where I get all the great old rock and rollers,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/dolly-parton-rock-roll-hall-fame-interview-1235066988\/#recipient_hashed=93b85917e72132b29e4e5fcf62cada3d6762d9684dbb2cec095014619834b78e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she shared<\/a>, \u201cthe people that I have always admired and respected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the months leading up to her Rock Hall induction on Nov. 5, and following, Parton has kept her promise and revealed more of the songs she intends to include on her album. During a recent appearance on&nbsp;<em>The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/em>&nbsp;on Nov. 30, Parton\u2014who performed her new song \u201cRockin&#8217;\u201d during her Rock Hall induction\u2014even shared the title of the album,&nbsp;<em>Rock Star<\/em>, and that it will be out in the autumn of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She previously hinted at doing an Elton John song and Aerosmith\u2019s Steven Tyler appearing on the album, which is rumoured to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/electricalwsop\/status\/1503710054016602116?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">produced by Steve Albini<\/a>, along with renditions of songs by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Prince, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at five songs the 76-year-old country (and rock) legend has revealed will be on her very first rock album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12808\" width=\"244\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-7.jpg 224w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-7-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-7-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-7-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-7-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>\u201c(I\u00a0Can\u2019t Get No)\u00a0Satisfaction,\u201d The Rolling Stones (1965)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton recently revealed that she is planning to cover&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/10-iconic-moments-from-the-rolling-stones-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Rolling Stones<\/a>\u2018 1965 classic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/behind-the-song-i-cant-get-no-satisfaction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(I&nbsp;Can\u2019t Get No)&nbsp;Satisfaction<\/a>.\u201d Whether members of the Stones are confirmed to join her on the recording is unknown, but Parton stated that she wants them involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to do the song \u2018Satisfaction,&#8217;\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/dolly-parton-rock-roll-hall-fame-interview-1235066988\/#recipient_hashed=93b85917e72132b29e4e5fcf62cada3d6762d9684dbb2cec095014619834b78e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Parton<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s one of my husband\u2019s favorite songs. And I may have to drag&nbsp;Mick [Jagger]\u2019s guys up there to help me sing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton added, \u201cI loved Jagger, and I love \u2018Satisfaction.\u2019 I\u2019m hoping we\u2019re both around long enough when I get to doing this record that he\u2019ll come sing with me, and I may have to use The Rolling Stones to play behind me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12809\" width=\"188\" height=\"120\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u201cStairway to Heaven,\u201d Led Zeppelin\u00a0(1971)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dolly also wants to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/dolly-parton-hopes-to-enlist-jimmy-page-and-robert-plant-for-her-rock-album\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reunite surviving members of Led Zeppelin<\/a>&nbsp;for a cover of their&nbsp;1971 classic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/one-song-three-ways-stairway-to-heaven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stairway to Heaven<\/a>.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m trying to see if Robert Plant <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> might sing on it,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.pollstar.com\/2022\/10\/27\/why-dolly-parton-belongs-in-the-rock-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Parton<\/a>. \u201cMaybe Jimmy Page might do the pick-up part on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last time Plant and Page recorded together was on \u201cMy Bucket\u2019s Got A Hole In It\u201d for the&nbsp;<em>Good Rockin\u2019 Tonight\u2014The Legacy Of Sun Records<\/em>&nbsp;compilation in 2001. The duo last performed together as Led Zeppelin on Dec. 10, 2007, along with founding Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, for a full-length concert, their first show together in more than 27 years. Led Zeppelin\u2019s final show with late drummer John Bonham was on July 7, 1980, in Berlin, Germany. Bonham died on Sept. 25, 1980, at the age of 32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton is a long-time fan of \u201cStairway to Heaven\u201d and previously recorded a version of the song on her 2002 album,&nbsp;<em>Halos &amp; Horns.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12810\" width=\"187\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-7.jpg 225w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-7-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-7-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-7-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-7-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> \u201cFree Bird,\u201d Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent interview, Parton also hinted at covering the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/behind-the-band-name-lynyrd-skynyrd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lynyrd Skynyrd<\/a>&nbsp;classic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/the-meaning-behind-free-bird-by-lynyrd-skynyrd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Free Bird<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI may do up a version of something like Lynyrd Skynyrd\u2019s \u201cFree Bird,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/awards\/dolly-parton-rock-roll-hall-fame-interview-1235066988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Parton<\/a>, \u201cand do my own versions of some classic things that I think would make good rock and roll songs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First released as the closing track on the band\u2019s self-titled debut in 1973, and still, the band\u2019s signature song, the \u201cFree Bird\u201d lyrics explore the liberation and loneliness of being on the road<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014<em>If I leave here tomorrow<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Would you still remember me?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For I must be traveling on now<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2018Cause there\u2019s too many places I\u2019ve got to se<\/em>e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lynyrd Skynyrd\u2019s original recorded version runs for more than nine minutes with the lyrics ending at the five-minute mark and the band\u2019s music, notably some of the most classic guitar riffs, closing out the remaining four minutes. (It\u2019s unknown how long Parton\u2019s version will run, but if she gets members of Skynyrd on board it may be a lengthy one.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12811\" width=\"186\" height=\"118\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Journey<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>photo 5<\/strong><strong> \u201cOpen Arms,\u201d Journey (1981)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her Rock Hall speech, Parton mentioned several artists she would like to collaborate with on her rock album and revealed that she and Perry will sing a&nbsp;cover of&nbsp;Journey\u2019s 1981 hit \u201cOpen Arms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just days after&nbsp;Parton\u2018s&nbsp;induction, former Journey singer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/steve-perry-set-to-sing-journey-hit-open-arms-on-dolly-partons-upcoming-rock-album\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Perry confirmed<\/a>&nbsp;that he will appear on the country music legend\u2019s upcoming rock album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Dolly says it\u2019s true, then it must be true,\u201d wrote Perry on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StevePerryMusic\/status\/1589802237874049024?s=20&amp;t=0XjcIb_VZoxVc6eYB6L9tg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a>, confirming his participation.&nbsp;\u201cHer voice is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written by Perry and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, and released on Journey\u2019s seventh album,&nbsp;<em>Escape<\/em>, \u201cOpen Arms\u201d was also featured on the soundtrack to the sci-fi film&nbsp;<em>Heavy Metal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/6-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12812\" width=\"117\" height=\"73\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>photo 6<\/strong><strong> &nbsp;\u201cPurple Rain,\u201d Prince (1984)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Parton recently appeared on&nbsp;<em>The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/em>, she also promised another classic cover on her album, Prince\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/purple-rain-album-cover-prince-story-meaning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Purple Rain<\/a>,\u201d the title track of his sixth album in 1984, the soundtrack for the film of the same name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Purple Rain<\/em>\u00a0became Prince\u2019s first album to reach No. 1 on the\u00a0Billboard\u00a0200 chart and spent 24 consecutive weeks at the top. The album also earned Prince and The Revolution Grammy Awards\u00a0for\u00a0Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and\u00a0Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
