We are addressing this immediately by providing each purchaser with an immediate refund.\u201d\u00b4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American Songwriter suggests that Simon &amp; Schuster originally revealed that 900 copies of the book were personally autographed by Dylan. \u201cYou hold in your hands something very special, one of just 900 copies available in the U.S.,\u201d read a letter signed by Jonathan Karp, the president and CEO of Simon &amp; Schuster, accompanying each purchase. \u201cThis letter is confirmation that the copy of the book you hold in your hand has been <strong><em>hand-signed<\/em><\/strong> by Bob Dylan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once copies of&nbsp;<em>The Philosophy of Modern Song<\/em>&nbsp;started to arrive to customers, many who spent $599 for a hand-signed copy by Dylan, noticed that the signatures were replicated after sharing photos of variations on public forums and then these recipients took to social media to call out the publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Nov. 20, the publisher began responding to irate customers in an e-mail letter, also signed by Karp, which read: \u201cWe apologize for the mistake that was made and are offering a full refund of your purchase. Please keep your copy of&nbsp;<em>The Philosophy of Modern Song<\/em>&nbsp;at no cost. We hope you will enjoy reading it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presidential signatures are often placed on government bills using autopen, which has been in use since the early 19th century when Thomas Edison first began using the device. Earlier versions replicated a template of a signature, which was cut through a metal plate and then traced over with a stylus pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another of the excellent and even-handed writers at American Songwriter, Jacob Uitti reported on how Dylan himself responded to the controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Dylan has released a statement, Uitti reported, concerning the fake signature controversy with his new book,&nbsp;<em>The Philosophy Of Modern Song<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, publishing company Simon &amp; Schuster &nbsp;confirmed the selling fake hand-signed copies of Dylan\u2019s book. I\u2019ve hand-signed each and every art print over the yearsand there\u2019s never been a problem<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>However, in 2019 I had a bad case of vertigo and it continued into the pandemic years. It takes a crew of five working in close quarters with me to help enable these signing sessions, and we could not find a safe and workable way to complete what I needed to do while the virus was raging<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So, during the pandemic, it was impossible to sign anything and the vertigo didn\u2019t help. With contractual deadlines looming, the idea of using an auto-pen was suggested to me, along with the assurance that this kind of thing is done \u2018all the time\u2019 in the art and literary worlds.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Using a machine was an error in judgment and I want to rectify it immediately.
