I wasn\u00b4t one of the half a million strong who arrived at Woodstock, and I wasn\u00b4t on Magic Mountain with The Kingston Trio,\u2026..and I never got to see Loretta Lynn in concert. Neither did I fly the Atlantic to catch what I now learn, from reading Jacob Uitti in American Songwriter,&nbsp; that the concert called to celebrate her life, within just a couple of weeks of her passing, was something quite extraordinary.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These reliable narrators at magazines such as American Songwriter, (and Paste on\/line, too, for example) write accurately, beautifully and for the most part very objectively, although they are not afraid to wax lyrical when on a music or musician they love.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was hosted, <em>Jacob Uitti wrote<\/em>, &nbsp;by&nbsp;Jenna Bush Hager,&nbsp;the night featured emotional performances, tributes, and special messages from&nbsp;Alan Jackson, Barbara Mandrell, Brandi Carlile, Darius Rucker, Dolly Parton, Faith Hill, George Strait and there were plenty of others too,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12692\" width=\"422\" height=\"236\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These included Highwomen\u2019s\u00a0Carlile,\u00a0Amanda \u00a0Shires <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0Natalie Hemby\u00a0with\u00a0Brittany Spencer, Hoda Kotb, Jack White, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Marty Stuart, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Sissy Spacek, Tanya Tucker, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw,\u00a0and\u00a0Wynonna\u00a0feat.\u00a0Gaither Vocal Band\u00a0and\u00a0Larry Strickland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;It was a meeting of the clans, a gatherfing of the family of country music old and new, and that speaks volumes of the impact and influence that Loretta had on the genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The offering was presented by Country Music Television and Sandbox Productions in partnership with Lynn\u2019s family. It aired live commercial-free from the Grand Ole Opry House exclusively on CMT and was simulcast on SiriusXM\u2019s Willie Roadhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12693\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening the memorial,\u00a0Wynonna Judd <strong><em>(right)<\/em><\/strong> with.\u00a0Gaither\u00a0Vocal Band\u00a0and\u00a0Larry Strickland\u00a0delivered a\u00a0chills-inducing performance of the classic hymn,\u00a0\u201cHow Great Thou Art\u201d for the night\u2019s first standing ovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12694\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-1-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-1-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-1-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The show\u00b4s highlights included Jack White\u2019s surprise appearance and powerful live performance of\u00a0Van Lear Rose,\u00a0the title track of his and Loretta\u2019s Grammy-winning album. Introduced by\u00a0Margo Price, fans were also treated to a rarely seen performance from Third Man Records\u00a0Vault Package #24, featuring\u00a0White <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> and Lynn performing Whispering Sea, a favorite of White\u2019s and one of the first songs Loretta ever wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Highwomen\u2019s&nbsp;Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby&nbsp;along with&nbsp;Brittney Spencer&nbsp;performed the finale of Lynn\u2019s most recognizable hit,&nbsp; Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter.&nbsp;Earlier in the night, Carlile also offered a solo performance of &nbsp;She\u2019s Got You&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Jackson&nbsp;expressed his gratitude to the Lynn family for allowing him to sing&nbsp;Where Her Heart Has Always Been,&nbsp;the song he wrote for his mother when she passed away, in memory of Loretta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He shared that Loretta often reminded him of his mother: \u201cLoretta was always very sweet to me from the time I stepped on this stage 30 years ago. She reminded me a lot of my mama. Both were outgoing, sweet, and genuine and would tell you exactly what was on their minds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lynn\u2019s granddaughter,&nbsp;Emmy Russell,&nbsp;joined forces with Willie Nelson\u2019s son,&nbsp;Lukas Nelson,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>to perform, to a standing ovation, Lay Me Down, the first song Willie and Loretta ever recorded together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12695\" width=\"425\" height=\"239\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Keith Urban <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0fondly remembered Loretta by playing a voicemail she had left for him inviting him to her birthday party. \u201cKeith, it\u2019s Loretta. I\u2019m having a birthday and your butt better be there,\u201d the voicemail said. Urban followed the voicemail with his rendition of\u00a0 You\u2019re Looking At Country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>photo 5 I fondly remember the BBC broadcasting a couple of tv series featuring the always effervescent Barbara Mandrell and her sister, and at this celebration of Loretta\u00b4s life&nbsp; Barbara herself recalled watching the movie<em>&nbsp;Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter&nbsp;<\/em>on her tour bus, calling Lynn an \u2018iconic talent\u2019 who was also kind, generous, and loving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cPeople are watching for one reason, we all love Loretta,\u201d Mandrell said. \u201cThere was only one Loretta.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then introduced&nbsp;Tanya Tucker,&nbsp;who sang&nbsp;Blue Kentucky Girl,&nbsp;accompanied by her daughters&nbsp;Layla&nbsp;and&nbsp;Presley&nbsp;on&nbsp;background vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12696\" width=\"427\" height=\"284\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Martina McBride\u00a0<strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong> shared an emotional memory of the day that Loretta inducted her into the Grand Ole Opry and remarked that \u2018women of country music could not be where we are today without Loretta Lynn.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was funny and fun. She was wise and a brilliant songwriter,\u201d McBride said. \u201cShe was so real and always Loretta.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George Strait&nbsp;remembered Loretta as \u201cone helluva songwriter and entertainer,\u201d also saying, \u201c\u2018I love her and miss her dearly\u201d as he delivered her first No. 1 hit,&nbsp; Don\u2019t Come Home A-Drinkin\u2019 (With Lovin\u2019 On Your Mind).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Host&nbsp;Jenna Bush Hager&nbsp;recalled the controversy surrounding one of Lynn\u2019s biggest hits, The Pill\u2014a song that country radio originally refused to play, but that tonight was sung by a spirited&nbsp;Margo Price. Then Lynn\u2019s grand-daughter&nbsp;Tayla Lynn&nbsp;and daughter&nbsp;Patsy Lynn Russell&nbsp;took the stage and recalled their pride in all that Lynn accomplished and how loved she was by the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the evening, more ofLynn\u2019s closest friends and fans delivered heartfelt speeches and shared personal memories, including&nbsp;Sissy Spacek who recalled being \u201cthunderstruck\u201d upon first meeting Loretta;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dolly Parton&nbsp;shared that \u201cLoretta was the best friend anybody could ever have.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor Swift&nbsp;praised Lynn for being an example for all songwriters, particularly females with her \u2018truthful, fearless honesty\u2019 in her writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It certainly sounds like an incredible tribute to a wonderful woman and artist.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/note-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12698\" width=\"96\" height=\"63\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>please note logo The prime source for this article was originally published in American Songwriter by Jacob Uitti. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>In our occasional re-postings Sidetracks And Detours are confident that we are not only sharing with our readers excellent articles written by experts but that we are also pointing to informed and informative sites readers will re-visit time and again.
