S. Lowry and Redgrave playing his mother, Elizabeth Lowry. Spall previously played&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._M._W._Turner\">J. M. W. Turner<\/a>, also a famous painter, in the 2014 biographical film&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mr._Turner\">Mr. Turner<\/a>&nbsp;which won him the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cannes_Film_Festival_Award_for_Best_Actor\">Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor<\/a>. For his role as L. S. Lowry, Spall stated that, unlike&nbsp;<em>Mr. Turner<\/em>&nbsp;he did not have to take a refresher course on painting as the film had very little of it.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adrian_Noble\">Adrian Noble<\/a>&nbsp;was also announced to be the film&#8217;s director, with Martyn Hesford penning the screenplay based on his original stage play which he also wrote. The film was produced by Debbie Gray under the production company Genesius Pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Principal_photography\">Principal photography<\/a>&nbsp;began in January, 2018, shooting in various locations around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\">London<\/a>&nbsp;and areas in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Manchester\">Greater Manchester<\/a>&nbsp;mainly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manchester\">Manchester<\/a>&nbsp;Filming wrapped about a month later in Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 29 January 2018, it was announced that English composer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Warbeck\">Stephen Warbeck<\/a>&nbsp;would be scoring&nbsp;<em>Mrs Lowry &amp; Son<\/em>. However, due to reasons unknown, Scottish composer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Craig_Armstrong_(composer)\">Craig Armstrong<\/a>&nbsp;took over scoring duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Mrs Lowry &amp; Son<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biographical_film\">biographical<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drama_(film_and_television)\">drama film<\/a>&nbsp;set in Pendlebury Greater Manchester, chronicling the life of the renowned artist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L._S._Lowry\">L. S. Lowry<\/a>. It was directed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adrian_Noble\">Adrian Noble<\/a>&nbsp;from a screenplay written by Martyn Hesford who also wrote the original play, and considers the relationship between Lowry and his mother Elizabeth, who has reservations over her son&#8217;s career in painting.&nbsp;It stars&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanessa_Redgrave\">Vanessa Redgrave<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timothy_Spall\">Timothy Spall<\/a>&nbsp;in the title roles, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Lord\">Stephen Lord<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Schaal_(actor)\">David Schaal<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wendy_Morgan_(actress)\">Wendy Morgan<\/a>&nbsp;in supporting roles in the cast list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanessa_Redgrave\">Vanessa Redgrave<\/a>&nbsp;as Elizabeth Lowry<ul><li>Rose Noble as Young Elizabeth<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timothy_Spall\">Timothy Spall<\/a>&nbsp;as L. It was released in the UK on 30 August 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L._S._Lowry\">L. S. Lowry<\/a>&nbsp;lived with his overbearing mother, Elizabeth, until her death in 1939.
