What was it about a poster from an old rodeo? <strong><em>(see left)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11360\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, John Prine was one of the greatest American songwriters the world has seen. Prine, who was born in 1946 in Maywood, Illinois, and passed away in 2020 at 73 years old, due to complications with COVID-19, will live forever in the collective memories of music fans. His songs have been, and will continue to be be covered\u2026.. long into the next millennium. it\u2019s fair to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His words outside of song were strongly resonant, too, and anyone who knew him thought him to be both a profound and a prosaic conversationalist. He peppered his talking with his thoughts on death, life, and the craft of music. He was a conveyor belt of usable quotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the subject of death, he once told an interviewer that <em>\u00b4I guess I just process death differently than some folks. Realizing you\u2019re not going to see that person again is always the most difficult part about it. But that feeling settles, and then you are glad you had that person in your life, and then the happiness and the sadness get all swirled up inside you\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/3-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11361\" width=\"191\" height=\"256\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He was insightful whenever he talked about the music business of the part he played in it and has been quoted as saying, <em>\u00b4I don\u2019t concern myself with where I fit in. I just keep my head down and keep doing whatever it is I\u2019m going. I\u2019m kind of like the Lone Ranger<strong> (left)<\/strong>  or Batman. I can just go to my mansion and jump out in my uniform and sing on weekends\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<em>\u00b4As far as my guitar picking, if I make the same mistakes at the same time every gig, people will start calling it a style<\/em>\u00b4, he continued in a phrase that was perhaps referencing critics as much as fans. <em>\u00b4It was always difficult for me to listen to my singing voice for the first 20 years or so. I mean, I really enjoyed singing, and I enjoyed doing live shows, but being in a recording studio and having to hear my voice played back to me would really drive me up the wall\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And going back to the critics, he once admitted that <em>\u00b4If parts of the review are true, those are the parts that sting\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-11.jpg 225w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-11-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-11-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-11-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-11-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> Perhaps his opinion of his own vocals explain why he so often duetted on his recordings, with the likes of Iris De Ment <strong>(right)<\/strong>. He had other reasons as well and once said that <em>\u00b4I think the best duets are those where there\u2019s a dialogue back and forth, and then the two singers go into a thing together\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explaining the frequent use of humour in his songs, he told a reporter that <em>\u00b4If I can make myself laugh about something that I should be crying about, that\u2019s pretty good\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4I guess what I have always found funny is the human condition. There is a certain comedy and pathos to trouble and accidents. Like, when a driver has parked his car crookedly and then wonders why he has the bad luck of being hit\u00b4<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That Prine was such a vibrant and vivid speaker was perhaps because he was such a good listener ! He fully drank in the stories he himself was told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4If you listen to people talk when people actually talk, they talk in melodies. If they get angry, their voice rises, and it\u2019s more of a staccato thing. When they ask for something, they\u2019re real sweet. It\u2019s all music. I just like a good, sad song. The sadder, the better. It moves me\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the hundreds of singer-writers I have been privileged to interview,&nbsp; very few indeed have seemed keen to examine the muse, or their methodology. Most, like the afore-mentioned Iris De Ment prefer to \u00a8Let The Mystery Be\u00b4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was never fortunate enough to meet John Prine, though I saw him in concert a few times and read up on him whenever I could. Some of what I read suggested he, too, didn\u00b4t want to poke and prod at what he seemed able to achieve through inate ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4I could never teach a class on song-writing\u00b4,<\/em> I read somewhere. <em>\u00b4I\u2019d tell them to goof off and find a good hideout\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He perhaps best revealed his reluctance to examine the muse when he said . <em>\u201cIgnorance is bliss as a writer, I think. Writing is about a blank piece of paper and leaving out what\u2019s not supposed to be there<\/em>\u00b4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4I think if you write from your own gut, you\u2019ll come up with something interesting, whereas if you sit around guessing what people want, you end up with the kind of same schlock that everybody else has got\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of that should not be taken to suggest John Prine took music lightly, however, as he explained by saying <em>\u00b4Soon as I could play one guitar chord and laid my ear upon that wood, I was gone. My soul was sold. Music was everything from then on<\/em>. <em>I embraced loneliness as a kid. I know what loneliness is. When you\u2019re at the end of your rope. I never forget those feelings.<\/em> <em>Man, I hated school. I\u2019d stare at the buttons on the teacher\u2019s shirt the whole class<\/em>\u00b4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless that reluctant student went on to create some of the greatest poetry in Americana music. His songs are littered with conversational dialogue and have a remarkable sense of characterisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4I always had an affinity for older people\u00b4,<\/em> he once remembered. <em>\u00b4I had a job delivering newspapers, and one place I had to go was an old people\u2019s home. Some people would introduce you to their neighbours as if you were a nephew or grandson. They didn\u2019t get many visitors, so they acted like you were coming to see them. And that stuck with me for a long time\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An eye for the minutia of life informed his writing and his understanding of the people who spoke to him had him writing observant lines like <em>\u00b4How the hell can a person go to work in the morning and come home in the evening and have nothing to say?\u00b4<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might be argued that some of his songs were produced almost in partnership with almost the entire population of his country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He once admitted that he was <em>\u00b4fascinated by America\u2026it\u2019s so odd<\/em>\u00b4 and when that line is put together with yet another John Prine quote we perhaps are given our clearest insight into how he worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4I think the more the listener can contribute to the song, the better; the more they become part of the song, and they fill in the blanks. Rather than tell them everything, you save your details for things that exist. Like what color the ashtray is. How far away the doorway was. So when you\u2019re talking about intangible things like emotions, the listener can fill in the blanks and you just draw the foundation\u00b4.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was sanguine, it seemed, even about how the entertainment industry worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00b4I\u2019ll go to the movies and hear \u2018Angel From Montgomery\u2019 in some film, and nobody ever even told me about it. They don\u2019t tell you your stuff is going to be in a movie. They don\u2019t have to, so they don\u2019t tell you. You get paid,\u2026. eventually.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case we think John Prine bore any resentment of that kind of treatment and of having the control of his own product usurped by others he reminded us when he replied in the voice of Dear Abby to a fictional correspondent of low and fragile self-esteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;\u201cBewildered, bewildered, you have no complaint. You are what you are, and you ain\u2019t what you ain\u2019t.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"311\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-10.jpg 311w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-10-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear Abby was the most syndicated \u00b4agony aunt\u00b4 column in the world (left).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11364\" width=\"219\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4.png 320w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-80x80.png 80w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-36x36.png 36w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-180x180.png 180w, https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/4-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> Penned, in fact, by Abigail Van Buren, <strong><em>(right)<\/em><\/strong>  the column still addresses not only marital problems and issues of social etiquette but also topics such as addiction, covid 19, ageing and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while Dear Abby is still peddling common sense advice down here in earth, John Prine might still be penning pithy songs on the same subjects even up there in Heaven,\u2026..with a pretty damned good choir joining in on the chorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because, as Tina Benitez Eves&nbsp; reminds us again, writing the story behind the song Please Don\u00b4t Bury Me for American Songwriter, John Prine was always profound in the plain speaking of both his conversation and his songs. His lyrics to Please Don\u2019t Bury Me, she suggests, tell of John Prine anticipating his own death by singing his own words<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off Prine\u2019s 1973 album&nbsp;Sweet Revenge, the story, and lyrics are all the more poignant now, following the death of the singer and songwriter in 2020, but addressing death and the afterlife was no new subject for Prine, who later penned the \u201cHe Was In Heaven Before He Died,\u201d off his fourth album&nbsp;Common Sense&nbsp;in 1975, a song inspired by the death of his father four years earlier, or the many mortal recollections on his final album&nbsp;Tree of Forgiveness&nbsp;(2018), inspired by his surviving cancer in 1998 and again in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not as somber as these subsequent songs, when Prine originally wrote the song at the age of 27, there was some more levity behind the more toe-tapping song. \u201cDon\u2019t Bury Me\u201d offered another picture of the end and his \u201cThat song was originally about this character I had in mind called Tom Brewster,\u201d said Prine. \u201cHe dies but he wasn\u2019t supposed to, like that scene in those old movies. The angels have to send him back, but they can\u2019t the way he is. So they send him back as a rooster, which is why his name is Brewster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prine added, \u201cI ended up trashing that whole part and came up with this idea of the guy just giving all of his organs away, and I made a whole song out of that. It\u2019s the best organ donor campfire song I know of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pondering his idea of the afterlife, Prine sets the scene of his own fabricated demise right from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/6-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11366\" width=\"492\" height=\"516\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Woke up this morning<br>Put on my slippers<br>Walked in the kitchen and died<br>And oh what a feeling!<br>When my soul went through the ceiling<br>And on up into heaven I did ride<br>When I got there they did say<br>John, it happened this way<br>You slipped upon the floor<br>And hit your head<br>And all the angels say<br>Just before you passed away<br>These were the very last words<br>That you said<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Please don\u2019t bury me<\/em><em><br><\/em><em>Down in the cold cold ground<\/em><em><br>No, I\u2019d rather have \u2019em cut me up<br>And pass me all around<br>Throw my brain in a hurricane<br>And the blind can have my eyes<br>And the deaf can take both of my ears<br>If they don\u2019t mind the size<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweet Revenge <strong><em>(left)<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;was produced by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arif_Mardin\">Arif Mardin<\/a>&nbsp;and was mostly recorded at Quadraphonic Sound Studios in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nashville,_Tennessee\">Nashville<\/a>. As Prine biographer Eddie Huffman observes,&nbsp;Sweet Revenge&nbsp;was a full-band LP recorded in Tennessee, but the singer had grown dramatically as a vocalist and recording artist over the previous two years. \u00b4He sounded fully integrated with the backing musicians this go-around&#8230;\u00b4<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweet_Revenge_(John_Prine_album)#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHuffman201588-1\"><sup>]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;Two songs, Blue Umbrella and Onomatopoeia, were recorded at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Recording_Studios\">Atlantic Recording Studios<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>&nbsp;while Dear Abby was cut live at a gig at New York&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/State_University\">State University<\/a>&nbsp;in New Paltz. Dear Abby was attempted in the studio but, as Prine told David Fricke in 1993, &#8220;The studio version of that was cut with a band, and it was real stiff and humourless. We cut it once, live, and that was it. That was the power of the song, in the way people would turn their heads the minute I&#8217;d get to the first verse, the first chords. That was the reason we used the live version.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album features many of the same musicians who played on Prine&#8217;s debut album, along with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cissy_Houston\">Cissy Houston<\/a>, who was a member of the Elvis Presley accompaniment group, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweet_Inspirations\">Sweet Inspirations<\/a>, and Houston, Deidre Tuck, and Judy Clay sing with Prine on the title track&#8217;s call-and-response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweet Revenge quotes a line from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hunter_S._Thompson\">Hunter S. Thompson<\/a>&#8216;s&nbsp;Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail&nbsp;and reflects some of Prine&#8217;s frustrations with how his second album was received, commenting in the&nbsp;Great Days: The John Prine Anthology&nbsp;liner notes, &#8220;I&#8217;d quit my job at the post office, I had this album out that got incredible reviews, and then this second one where the critics started to hit me. I think it got under my skin.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the liner notes to&nbsp;John Prine Live, Prine writes that Mexican Home was partially inspired by his father Bill sitting on his front porch in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maywood,_Illinois\">Maywood, Illinois<\/a>, while Grandpa Was A Carpenter was his homage to his grandfather Empson Schobie Prine. Christmas In Prison mixed humour with pathos, romantic longing with some of Prine&#8217;s most cinematic imagery to date.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweet_Revenge_(John_Prine_album)#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHuffman201587-3\"><\/a>&nbsp;In the&nbsp;Great Days&nbsp;liner notes, Prine writes of the tune, &#8220;It&#8217;s about a person being somewhere like a prison, in a situation they don&#8217;t want to be in. And wishing they were somewhere else. But I used all the imagery as if it were an actual prison, with the lights swinging around the yard, the food tasting bad, making guns out of wood or soap. And being a sentimental guy, I put it at Christmas.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please Don&#8217;t Bury Me was a rollicking country toe-tapper with some intricate guitar interplay but had been redrafted, with Prine recalling in&nbsp;Great Days, \u201cThat song was originally about this character I had in mind called Tom Brewster. I ended up trashing that whole part and came up with this idea of the guy just giving all of his organs away, and I made a whole song out of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album cover is a far cry from the somewhat naive portraits of the singer on his first two LPs: a bearded, denim-clad Prine &#8211; wearing sunglasses and pointy-toed cowboy boots, a cigarette jutting from his lips &#8211; sprawls across the leather front seats of a 1959 Porsche convertible, the &#8220;first toy&#8221; the singer purchased with his record company money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aata.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/note-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11368\" width=\"117\" height=\"77\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The prime source for this article was a piece by Tina Benitez-Eves for American Songwriter.
