Rob Adams, who does such a fantastic job of informing the wide world what\u00b4s going on in live jazz in the UK, tells Sidetracks And Detours that August can often be quiet as jazz promoters recharge their batteries before launching a new season.  You could have fooled me, Rob!  The list above seems to us, at Sidetracks And Detours, to have something for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Rob also reminds us that August can also offer the potential for trips away from the usual haunts, like taking the ferry to Dunoon to see saxophonist Brian Molley\u00b4s Intercontinental project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, though, there is a new series of concerts in Hawick featuring music of different styles with the jazz element getting off to a strong start.  Saxophonist Konrad (left)<\/strong><\/em> and pianist Brian Kellock may be a relatively new pairing but their repertoire gives these two masters the chance to explore jazz standards and spontaneously create fresh excitement.  This will be melodic, swinging, accessible jazz at the Heart of Hawick on Friday 5th<\/sup> August 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aforementioned Brian Molloy\u00b4s group, featuring special guest, the Indian percussionist Krishna Kishnor, have had fantastic reviews for their latest album, Intercontinental album, not least from Songlines magazine.  That is the latest publication to approve the album, describing it as a \u00e1 sublime and compelling cross-cultural conversation\u00b4.  The group plays the Old Hairdressers in Glasgow on Thursday 18th<\/sup> August and then two nights at The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh on the 19th<\/sup> and 20th<\/sup> of the month before going across to Dunoon Burgh Hall on Sunday 21st<\/sup> August for a 3.00 pm start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile Beacon Jazz Club continues to present leading musicians on the Scottish scene, and August\u00b4s guest is singer Louise Dodds (left)<\/em><\/strong>.  Her current album is the intriguingly titled The Story Needs An Ending and has been warmly received with glowing reviews.  Jazzwise described it as \u00b4strongly cathartic\u00b4 and the Scotsman also enthused about Louise delving so deeply into her own life experiences.  You will be able to hear and judge for yourselves when Louise takes her quartet to The Beacon Arts Centre on 25th<\/sup> August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only are there positive stories of live jazz music in the UK at the moment but there is also heady success for one of our favourite Jazz Radio programmes, Hot Biscuits, presented by our friend Steve Bewick, (below right)<\/em><\/strong> a regular contributor to these pages.  So we\u00b4ll let Steve himself tell you all about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks, Norm, If I could play the trumpet now might be a good time to blow it as M-Cloud had placed me 6th<\/sup> in their global Jazz vocals listings and 8th<\/sup> in their global Cool Jazz listing. Now might be a good time for listeners old and new to check out how I reached these dizzy heights by catching my archive additions during July.  There they will find broadcasts about Czeslaw Kazimierek and his notions of Time, Terry Pack\u00b4s Trees, Israeli sounds from guitarist Ofer Shapira, live sessions from the Johnny Hunter and the Kyran Matthews Quartet, as well as the Joe Parnell Quartet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve, and his co-presenting buddy Gary Heywood-Everett both really know their jazz stuff and Steve is great in identifying the local talent on his North West beat of the UK jazz scene, but he is always keen to check out visiting musicians from other parts of the UK to help him deliver the best of jazz on his Hot Biscuits broadcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His latest mix-cloud performance is of a Hot Biscuits programme in which Steve and Gary Heywood-Everett share airtime with Fusebox, featuring Ken Serio, Mike Stern & Brian Charette.  Music also from The Lara Eidi Trio, Peter Oxley & Nicolas Meier Guitar Project, Liane Carroll, Matyas Gayer Trio and Fiona Ross.  If you like the looks of this share with your friends and tune in at www.mixcloud.com\/stevebewick<\/a> which will take you to the beginning of the show and you can hear it 24\/7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have previously observed here at Sidetracks And Detours that of all the genres of music in the UK, jazz seems to have the most tightly-knit communities and the most comprehensive networking system with so many jazz magazines, newspapers, radio stations, programmes and listing agencies such as Music That\u00b4s Going Places, Jazz In Reading and Ribble Valley Jazz And Blues Festival all providing regular news updates, and we would like to think that the synergy we enjoy with Steve at Hot Biscuits somehow contributes to all this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lady who has appeared on both Steve\u00b4s Hot Biscuits radio output and on these pages over the last twelve months or so is jazz singer Beverley Beirne (left)<\/em><\/strong> .  As we noted in our feature, The Fifty Best Of on Friday 29th<\/sup> July.  Beverley began a residency last week at The Ticket Office in Ilkely and took to Facebook to tell us all of what an exciting night it was.  So again, I\u00b4ll let Beverley herself tell you all about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first night of the residency at The Ticket Office, Ilkley went down so well.  What an amazing night!!!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of being in the back room as planned, due to the large numbers who booked tables, the venue turned their front bar into a jazz club for the night and extra bar staff were drafted in!  Even the owner Adam was behind the bar at one point!!!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What an incredible atmosphere!  I can\u00b4t tell you!  I always think you need the holy trinity of band, venue and audience just right to his that sweet spot.  We\u00b4re all in it together and all 3 teams his that perfect note!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u00b4t be more grateful!!!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday 7th<\/sup> August<\/strong> the guests, Alan Grahame (right)<\/em><\/strong>, on vibes and percussion and Ken McCarthy on piano, at Pangbourne Jazz Club will be backed by the club\u00b4s rhythm section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pianist Ken McCarthy studied composition at the Guildhall School of music and played in the experimental bands of Mike Westbrook, John Surman and Mike Osbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later based himself in Amsterdam and toured Europe and Japan with many visiting American Jazz stars.  He broadened his horizons to TV and recording sessions and orchestral work.  He has also developed a career as a musical director and arranger, his credits include many West End shows including \u2013 \u201cBubbling Brown Sugar!, \u201c42nd<\/sup> Street\u201d, \u201cBarnum\u201d and \u201cJoseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ken has also been personal accompanist and director for Dame Vera Lynn, the late Roy Castle and singer Vince Hill.  He has always had a keen interest in \u201cclassical music\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This very experienced musician with a long successful musical career spanning 40+ years, playing alongside Alan Grahame will surely provide another very special night at this great venue.  Jazz fans can pay their ten pounds entry on the door on the night or book on line to ensure they don\u00b4t miss this event which starts at 7.30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
