Now that I live here on Lanzarote, and Manchester, England, England Tom Besford and his colleagues at  English Folk Expo I am delighted to be kept informed of what is going in my old stopming grounds and Sidetracks And Detours are absolutely thrilled to share with our readers the English Folk Expo press announcement  about the \u00a0new wave of artists joining the line up for this year&#8217;s Manchester Folk Festival 13th &#8211; 15th October 2022!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>All shows now on sale!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Want to get to know the artists? And we hope we&#8217;ve done just that!<br><br>Today we announcement a mix of traditional and contemporary artists including;\u00a0Rachael Dadd, The Jackie Oates Trio, Douglas Dare, Fiona Bevan and clarinet\/ piano ambient experimentalists, Group Listening\u00a0plus\u00a0David Gibb brings his sell-out family show Family Jukebox to International Anthony Burgess Foundation on the afternoon of Saturday 15th October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>In HOME\u2019s Theatre 2 we welcome two brand-new projects &#8211; one using folk and storytelling to revisit stories of social change and one centred around global cultural collaboration.Reg Meuross\u2019 Stolen From God is a&nbsp;song cycle&nbsp;unfolding the history of England&#8217;s involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade and new commission, <strong>Touchstone<\/strong>, brings together traditional English and Kashmiri songs and tunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<br>Following on from the success of 2021, we once again bring our Festival Club to the first-floor restaurant in HOME. Starting on the Thursday night and running from 11pm \u2013 1am each night of the festival, the bustling club atmosphere is the perfect way to finish off your night at Manchester Folk Festival whilst being treated to three of England\u2019s up-and-coming folk artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival opens on Thursday 13 October with <strong>The Magpie Arc<\/strong> and <strong>Lady Maisery<\/strong><strong>. Jim Ghedi<\/strong> is now joined by <strong>Joshua Burnell<\/strong> in HOME. In The Blues Kitchen, <strong>Grace Petrie<\/strong><strong>\u2019s<\/strong> show sees two fantastic support artists in <strong><em>Lucy Grubb<\/em><\/strong> and <strong>GUISE<\/strong> while Impossible Theatre welcomes <strong>Rachael Dadd<\/strong> launching her new album, \u2018Kaleidoscope\u2019. In International Anthony Burgess Foundation we welcome English songsmith, <strong>Douglas Dare<\/strong> and <strong>The Jackie Oates Trio<\/strong> (\u201cone of England&#8217;s finest and most expressive traditional folk singers\u201d\u2013 Tradfolk). Thursday\u2019s Festival club will close day one with rising North-West soul-folk artist <strong>John Dhali<\/strong> and country-rock outfit&nbsp;<strong>Treetop Flyers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<br>Friday sees<strong> Thea Gilmore <\/strong>headline in HOME now joined by<strong> Flo Perlin and Clare Sands. Stolen From God <\/strong>in HOME Theatre 2 is a narrated song-cycle by <strong>Reg Meuross<\/strong>about the South West of England\u2019s involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade&nbsp;with<strong> Jali Fily Cissokho, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne <\/strong>and<strong> Jaz Gayle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reg Meuross is an artist we have featured many times on these pages. Five years of touring and TV work followed their album&nbsp;<em>In The Red<\/em>, produced by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clive_Gregson\">Clive Gregson<\/a>&nbsp;with the &#8220;Brothers&#8221; appearing regularly on TV, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saturday_Live_(UK_TV_series)\"><em>Friday Night Live<\/em><\/a>, and at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edinburgh_Festival\">Edinburgh<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sidmouth_Folk_Festival\">Sidmouth<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glastonbury_Festival\">Glastonbury<\/a>&nbsp;and other festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his work with The Panic Brothers, Meuross formed a roots band, The Flamingos, featuring ex-Graham Parker guitarist,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Belmont\">Martin Belmont<\/a>, Bob Loveday from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penguin_Caf%C3%A9_Orchestra\">Penguin Caf\u00e9 Orchestra<\/a>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Geldof\">Bob Geldof<\/a>&#8216;s band and Alison Jones of The Barely Works. The Flamingos recorded the album&nbsp;<em>Arrested<\/em>&nbsp;in 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meuross toured until 2009 with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hank_Wangford\">Hank Wangford<\/a>&nbsp;and The Lost Cowboys as a member of the band and also as a solo artist with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hank_Wangford\">Hank Wangford<\/a>&nbsp;on the &#8220;No Hall Too Small&#8221; tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meuross&#8217;s solo recording and touring career began in 1996. As a solo artist he has released 14 albums. In his review of&nbsp;<em>December<\/em>&nbsp;in 2016&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robin_Denselow\">Robin Denselow<\/a>&nbsp;described Meuross in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Guardian\">The Guardian<\/a>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>&#8220;..one of the more versatile, under-sung survivors of the English acoustic scene.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meuross co-wrote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seth_Lakeman\">Seth Lakeman<\/a>&#8216;s first single release&nbsp;<em>Divided We Will Fall<\/em>&nbsp;from the album&nbsp;<em>Well Worn Path<\/em>&nbsp;released on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cooking_Vinyl\">Cooking Vinyl<\/a>&nbsp;label in November 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in Theatre 2, <strong>Moxie<\/strong> bring their own sound of an Irish tradition inspired by global and contemporary cultures. Impossible Theatre, a brand new venue for the festival this year, hosts<strong> Hollie Rogers<\/strong>&nbsp;and &#8220;fusion upbeat danceable sounds&#8221; from<strong> Me and My Friends. <\/strong>In International Anthony Burgess Foundation<strong>, Lucy Farrell <\/strong>(\u201cSplendidly atmospheric\u201d &#8211; fRoots) and<strong> Fiona Bevan <\/strong><em>(\u201cStartling<\/em> Odysseys\u201d &#8211; The Guardian) headline their own intimate shows. Friday closes in the vibrant festival club with sets from <strong>Jacob &amp; Drinkwater<\/strong><strong>, Will Page <\/strong>(Noble Jacks) and<strong> The Carrivick Sisters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saturday afternoon includes an Irish celebration in HOME as Daoir\u00ed Farrell Trio is joined by the \u201cmesmeric\u201d Dani Larkin. In HOME\u2019s Theatre 1, &#8216;Face Of The 2021 Sea Shanty Rrevival&#8217;, &nbsp;The Longest Johns are joined by Ceitidh Mac (\u201ctransformative, progressive and mellow\u201d) and Angeline Morrison. In Theatre 2 The Drystones (\u201cbig bad beats for badass barn dancing\u201d) and string accompanied Hannah Moule and the Moulettes bring their contemporary approaches to folk and traditional music.
